 Week 6

SENSE, SIGHT AND SPEECH - TO A DONKEY

FOCUS

"So Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the officials of Moab. Balaam, the Donkey, and the Angel
God's anger was kindled because he was going, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the road as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him. The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand; so the donkey turned off the road, and went into the field; and Balaam struck the donkey, to turn it back on to the road. Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on either side." (Numbers 22: 21 - 24.  NRSV)

Balaam is Gods Power Talker. He, along with two of his servants are on the way to Moab. Balaam is being carried by his donkey, who has faithfully served him, all these years.

The mission today is one called for by the king of Moab, whose testimony of Balaam is most personal. Of Balaam he says,  ".... For I know that those you bless are blessed and those you curse are cursed ."( Numbers 22: 6(b)). He wants Balaam to come and curse the threatening enemy, but is this the road God wants His servant Balaam to take?

FACTS

  • God is highly annoyed with Balaam and opposes the path he is presently on.
  • God sends His angel with a drawn sword to destroy Balaam  on that path.
  • God wants to save His servant and gives His servant's donkey Sense, Sight and Speech.

Sense to know the utter seriousness of Balaam's error.
Sight to see the angel of God with a drawn sword, ready to strike.
Speech to talk and reason with Balaam regarding his harsh treatment of her.

  • God witnesses the three occasions when the donkey, making deviant maneuvers to save her master, is beaten severely.
  • God reveals truths to Balaam which bring him to his knees before God.

FREEDOM

Who is our Almighty and Sovereign Lord? What is too far-fetched or ridiculous for Him to do?  God in His wisdom can still choose to leave the highest, most powerful of His servants and reveal Himself in those not considered. Remember, two servants were with Balaam, yet God chose to use the donkey in a most miraculous way.

Are you one of those "not considered ones?"  Are you one of the lowest servants in the scheme of things? God can use you to give spiritual sense, sight and speech, to save His own people.
It is not His desire that any should  perish, thus God uses whatsoever means He desires, just to save His people.
